Green Agriculture and Climate-Smart Production

Transforming agricultural systems is key to meeting climate goals in Brazil. Green agriculture and climate-smart practices can reduce emissions and improve resilience.

2030 Goals

01

Mainstream climate-smart production systems across Brazil’s major producing regions, aligned with the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) and the Sectoral Plan for Low-Carbon Emissions in Agriculture (ABC+ Plan, 2021–2030).

02

Expand climate-aligned credit, technical assistance, and risk-sharing for family farmers and smallholders, closing gaps in access and capability across regions and value chains.

03

Operationalize farm-level monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) systems, such as the ABC+ Calc tool, within rural credit frameworks to track greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, soil health, and ecosystem restoration outcomes, enabling performance-linked lending and transparent sustainability disclosures.

04

Align domestic green credit and taxonomy criteria with international norms to crowd-in private investment and avoid greenwashing.

Status

Moderate Progress

Brazil has scaled federal and state credit lines for climate-smart agriculture, financing recovery of degraded pastures, low-carbon technologies, and integrated systems. Adoption is advancing but remains concentrated in specific regions and production chains.

RenovAgro, managed by the Brazilian Development Bank, funds integrated crop-livestock-forestry, degraded pasture recovery, manure-to-energy, and environmental compliance. Long maturities and full participation enable expansion through private banks and cooperatives.

The ABC+ Plan (2021–2030), Brazil’s main low-carbon agriculture strategy, broadened eligible practices for mitigation and adaptation and introduced ABC+ Calc, a monitoring tool to quantify greenhouse gas reductions and removals in rural credit operations.

The National Program for Degraded Pasture Conversion and Recovery (2023) seeks to restore up to 40 million hectares in ten years, tying credit eligibility to environmental registration and greenhouse gas performance criteria.
